From: Donna Dean, PhD <DeanD1@od.nih.gov> as posted today to the list CMMFDC-L

The Name Change Workgroup (NCW) has received considerable input in response to its draft Name Change Proposal and the information is being reviewed by the NCW members. Rather than respond to individual inquiries or requests for clarification, the NCW will provide a more comprehensive response to all the inquires following the proposal questionnaire deadline of January 7th. Even after this date, we look forward to continuing the dialogue with individuals and various constituent groups about their respective points of view. We will begin to develop a response in January which will address and clarify the many excellent points raised.

The NCW was created to investigate the broad name issues, communicate with various stakeholders, review existing literature, and develop recommendations. Considering this general mandate, we believe the draft recommendations are within the purview of the NCW. Our recommendations encompass an umbrella term, which we call Chronic Neuroendocrineimmune Dysfunction Syndrome (CNDS) and the concept of subgroups that exist under this term.

It is important to point out that The Name Change Workgroup is purely an advisory committee, empowered to make recommendations, not to enact those recommendations. Any such recommendation remains a potential possibility until the CFS Coordinating Committee (CFSCC) and the Department of Heath and Human Services decide how to respond to what the NCW officially presents. The CFSCC is an advisory committee which provides recommendations to the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. The Department of Health and Human Services is empowered to enact such recommendations.
